Reasons Florence County Residents Are Under The Police Microscope
If you live in South Carolina, you know that Florence County has been in the news too much over the past few years. We have been placed under a microscope and police arrests make the nightly news throughout the state. But why?
Police and prosecutors will tell you that they are no more aggressive in arresting and prosecuting people in Florence County than anywhere else in the state. But the truth is, people are arrested here for offenses that might otherwise result in just a warning in other communities across the state.
One reason police are increasing their presence is no-doubt due to the increasing population in general, and young people in particular. According to the 2010 census, the county’s population increased 10 percent between 1990 and 2000, and another nine percent over the past nine years. Included in this population explosion has been an increase in teenagers and young adult; almost always a target for increased police scrutiny.
In addition to the burgeoning population of youth, Florence County has a higher-than-average population of minorities across a variety of ethnicities. According to the 2000 census, nearly 40 percent of the residents were African-American, Asian, Hispanic and of other minority race.
As we turn the corner to the 2020 census, the population in general will certainly increase, and there is little doubt the police will be keeping an even closer eye on teenagers and young adults.
